Along the west coast of Greenland, 2026

EXPEDITION VOYAGE FROM Narsarsuaq TO NUUK

Entlang Westkueste Groenland

From Narsarsuaq, with the small settlement of Qassiarsuk in the very south of Greenland, the place where Erik the Red settled Greenland around 985, we explore the southern west coast, high up to the north, to our destination, the capital Nuuk, with its exciting mix of history and modernity. A journey of over 600 km as the crow flies, which becomes much more extensive with numerous trips into deep fjords to spectacular glaciers and small, remote settlements. A journey that also allows you to experience the gradual change in Greenland’s nature from the subarctic (with low forests in sheltered locations) to the north into the tundra world of the central Arctic within a single trip.

In 11 days/10 nights on board, you will experience one of the most impressive coasts in the world. In absolute solitude, you will sail through quiet fjords, along high mountains that rise steeply from the dark water, and hike to majestic glaciers, explore small islands, climb a viewpoint, immerse yourself in Greenland’s past with Inuits and Vikings, or experience the coexistence of hunter culture and modernity today. An unforgettable journey with experienced, Englishspeaking expedition leaders. The small ship with only 12 guests is also ideal for this. Throughout the entire route, we follow the principle of adapting to natural conditions: ice floes and wind determine our route. In this respect, all information provided here is only a possible sequence of events for an expedition.

The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the daily course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore only examples.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN NARSARSUAQ
Your Greenland trip begins with a flight from your home airport to Keflavik (Iceland), where you will spend one night.

DAY 2: EMBARKATION IN NARSARSUAQ
Today you will fly to Narsarsuaq. You will be met at the airport and transferred to the ship. In the afternoon, you will board the Cape RACE, which is safely moored in the deep Eriksfjord. The crew will welcome you aboard and you will receive the mandatory safety briefing. The fjord was named after Erik the Red, who settled here in Greenland around 985. He founded the settlement of Brattahlið with the first church built in Greenland, the foundations of which can still be found today. We will travel to the old settlement in sturdy and manoeuvrable Zodiac boats and visit the reconstruction of Tjodhilde’s church.

DAY 3 – 11: EXPLORING THE FJORD SYSTEMS AND THE WEST COAST BETWEEN NARSARSUAQ AND NUUK
During the journey north, sea conditions, drift ice and weather determine which fjord you visit or which settlement you call at each day. Fortunately, nature on this coast is so diverse that there are countless possibilities. For example, we try to sail as deep as possible through the pack ice into Nigerdlikasik Fjord to observe (and hear!) the calving of the glacier from a safe distance at the end of the fjord. Keen observation may be rewarded with sightings of humpback whales, seals or sea eagles, or we may glide past icebergs.

If we have time, we will venture from Nuuk between peaks up to 1616 metres high into the inner arms of Nuup Kangerlua, West Greenland’s largest fjord system, an exciting region that unfortunately has to be ignored on the usual long west coast tours. Here you will also find the remains of the second Viking settlement area, Vestribyggð (West Settlement), glaciers descending from the inland ice and the place where Nansen came down from the inland ice, exhausted. Furthermore, this region has Greenland’s largest reindeer population and salmon swim in some of the rivers – and, of course, we will come across tiny Inuit settlements.

DAY 12: DISEMBARKATION AND RETURN FLIGHT FROM NUUK VIA KEFLAVIK
Disembarkation on the  and return flight to Keflavik. Overnight stay at a hotel at the airport.

DAY 13: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME OR EXTENSION
Today you can take your return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, you can extend your stay with an individual programme we will be happy to advise you.
