FROM ICEBERGS TO GREAT GLACIERS 2027
EXPEDITION CRUISE FROM/TO ILULISSAT
This journey, with its true expedition character, combines two fascinating worlds: the world-famous Disko Bay, captivating with its gigantic icebergs and scenic diversity, and the gateway to the High Arctic. We set course for the Nuussuaq Peninsula and explore the northern waters around Uummannaq and Upernavik. Glacier ice in all its diversity and the rugged beauty of the high Arctic: this voyage offers both.
Humpback, fin and minke whales can often be observed in their natural habitat. The nature experience is complemented by exciting insights into the history and lives of the people – from the regional capital Ilulissat to remote outposts. As almost all of these places can only be reached by ship, the small MS Cape Race is the ideal base camp for respectfully approaching the untouched nature and inhabitants thanks to its size.
The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the day-to-day course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore only examples.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ILULISSAT
Your journey begins with a flight to Keflavík (Iceland) or Copenhagen (Denmark), where you will spend the night in a hotel.
DAY 2: ILULISSAT
Today you will fly from Keflavik to Ilulissat. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN ILULISSAT
In the afternoon, the MS Cape Race will be waiting for you at the harbour. With only 12 guests, lots of varnished wood and historical details, it exudes the charm of classic tramp shipping. Thanks to its design, it can call at even the smallest, most remote bays. After a warm welcome from the crew and a safety briefing, you will move into your cabins.
DAY 3 – DAY 15: DISCO BAY, UUMMANNAQ AND UPERNAVIK
Depending on the weather, we will explore the bay by ship or hike to Sermermiut (‘inhabitants of the glacier’). The abandoned settlement southeast of Ilulissat offers a fantastic view of the famous ice fjord.
In the following days, the first sight in the morning will be the huge icebergs passing by the deck in unexpected shapes and colours. These giants originate from Jakobshavn Isbræ, one of the most productive glaciers in the world, which releases around 35 cubic kilometres of ice into the sea every year. We will also try to experience the roar of Eqip Sermia from a safe distance – Greenland’s most active glacier flows directly into the sea.
On the way north, we pass the mining town of Qullissat, which was abandoned in 1972. The forced resettlement of the population there is still considered a symbol of Denmark’s difficult post-colonial policy (detailed in the Ilulissat Museum).
Our first major destination is Uummannaq, known for its spectacular fjords and breathtaking landscapes, which we will also explore on hikes. We then reach Upernavik and the northern Isfjord, which boasts an iceberg density that rivals that of Disko Bay. Both regions offer deep insights into Greenland’s cultural heritage. Finally, we begin our return journey to Ilulissat.
DAY 16: RETURN FLIGHT FROM ILULISSAT
Disembarkation, transfer to the airport and return flight to Iceland or Denmark. Overnight stay near the airport in Keflavík or Copenhagen.
DAY 17: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME OR EXTENSION IN ICELAN
Return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, you can extend your stay in Iceland – we will be happy to advise you!
