THE GIGANTIC ICEBERGS OF DISKO BAY 2027

EXPEDITION FROM/TO ILULISSAT

Cape Race und Diskobucht

On this expedition in western Greenland, one of the most exciting and rare natural spectacles on our planet awaits you. On our small but exquisite ‘Cape Race’ with only 12 guests on board, you will spend a week exploring the legendary Disko Bay with its glittering icebergs, gliding past the icy giants in the exotic light of the midnight sun. Such majestic moments will remain in your heart forever. Glacier ice in the most fantastic shapes is a very important aspect of this trip – alternating with impressions on land and an impressive mountain backdrop, as well as opportunities for whale watching and other flora and fauna. A visit to the calving Eqip Sermia glacier is another possible highlight of the trip, ice conditions in the fjord permitting. As are hikes along picturesque bays and deep fjords. Or how about a touching visit to a completely abandoned small town as a contrast?

The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the day-to-day course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore only examples.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ICELAND
Your Greenland trip begins with your arrival in Keflavík (Reykjavík International Airport) in Iceland or Copenhagen, where you will spend the night in a hotel.

DAY 2: ILULISSAT
Today you will fly to Ilulissat. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.

DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN ILULISSAT
In the afternoon, the small, cosy MS Cape Race, which can accommodate only 12 guests, awaits you at the harbour. With its many painted wooden features and historical details, it not only exudes the charm of classic tramp shipping, but can also call at the smallest and most remote bays. After a warm welcome from the crew and the obligatory safety briefing, you will move into your cabins.

DAY 3 – DAY 15: DISCO BAY, UUMMANNAQ AND UPERNAVIK
Depending on the weather, we will explore the bay by ship or hike to Sermermiut (meaning ‘inhabitants of the glacier’), an old, abandoned settlement southeast of Ilulissat that offers a fantastic view of the famous ice fjord.

In the days that follow, your first glimpse on deck in the morning will be of the enormous icebergs that dominate the landscape of Disko Bay and surprise you with their unexpected variety of colours, shapes and sizes. These ice giants originate from Jakobshavn Isbræ, one of the largest glaciers in the world, from where they flow into the sea at an unimaginable rate of around 35 cubic kilometres of ice per year. We try to experience the roar of the breaking ice masses of the Eqip Sermia glacier, which flows directly into the sea and is considered the most active glacier in Greenland, from a close but safe distance. On our way north, we pass the mining town of Qullissat, which was abandoned in 1972. The forced resettlement of the population made the town a symbol of Denmark’s problematic postcolonial policy in Greenland and the resulting social problems; the museum in Ilulissat deals with this in detail.

Our first destination is Uummannaq, a town in the municipality of Avannaata. The town is known for its breathtaking glaciers, icebergs and fjords. One of the main attractions is the Uummannaq Fjord. We will also explore this spectacular natural environment on numerous short hikes. The second destination is Upernavik and the Isfjord to the north, which has at least as many icebergs as Disko Bay. Overall, both places are unique and beautiful destinations, offering an insight into Greenland’s breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. We turn back in Upernavik and return to Ilulissat.

DAY 16: RETURN FLIGHT FROM ILULISSAT
Disembarkation in Ilulissat and return flight to Iceland/Denmark. Overnight stay at Keflavík or Copenhagen airport.

DAY 17: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME OR EXTENSION
Return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, you can extend your stay in Icelandwe will be happy to advise you.
