OF ICEBERGS AND FJORDS – A PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR, 2027

From ILULISSAT to QAQORTOQ

Groenland Fotoreise Cape Race

From Ilulissat in the north, you will explore the coast of West Greenland down to Qaqortoq in the south: an expedition along a wild, extremely lonely coastline. On the upcoming 1,200kilometre journey, with numerous trips into deep fjords to spectacular glaciers and small, remote Inuit settlements, you will explore this coastline on the small, comfortableCape Raceto the most remote corners, where only silence and the majesty of nature reign. In the south, almost unreal green pastures await you at the small settlement of Qassiarsuk, right next to the remains of one of the most important early Viking sites: Brattahlíð.

The planned itinerary

Ice and wind determine the daily schedule of the expedition. The itineraries mentioned here are therefore exemplary.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN COPENHAGEN OR KEFLAVÍK
Your Greenland trip begins with your arrival in Keflavík (Iceland), where you will spend one night in a hotel.

DAY 2: ILULISSAT
Today you will fly to Ilulissat. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.

DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN UPERNAVIK
In the afternoon, the small, cosy ‘Cape Race’ with only 12 guests awaits you at the harbour. After a warm welcome from the crew and the obligatory safety briefing, you will move into your comfortable cabins and the ship will set sail for its first explorations in the bay.

DAY 3 – DAY 16: HEADING SOUTH
On the journey south, the sea conditions and weather determine each day whether or how deep we can sail into a fjord or visit a remote, small Inuit settlement. Fortunately, nature on this coast is so diverse that there are countless possibilities. We may make a detour to the village of Kangaamiut, population 300, which is only accessible by ship. Beyond Kangaamiut, the legendary Eternity Fjord penetrates deep inland between high mountains. We glide past these to the glacier, which we hike up to.

With only 20,000 inhabitants, Nuuk is by far the largest city in Greenland and underlines its status as capital with a modern centre featuring some exciting architecture (such as the Katuaq cultural centre), museums worth visiting, craft and book shops and, of course, Greenland’s largest port – and, in contrast, the historic harbour district on the west side with Greenland’s counterpart to the Little Mermaid on a rock. Nuuk is a great place to spend a whole day exploring the city. Again and again, we can observe humpback whales, seals or sea eagles, or we spot icebergs. Or we try to sail as deep as possible into the Nigerlikasik fjord to observe (and hear!) the calving of the glacier from a safe distance at its end.

At the southernmost tip of Greenland’s west coast, the landscape becomes increasingly green, and you will understand why Erik the Red settled here in Greenland around 985. Deep in the safe Eriksfjord, he founded the settlement of Brattahlíð with the first church built in Greenland, the foundations of which can still be found today. We will travel to the old settlement in sturdy and manoeuvrable Zodiac boats and visit Tjodhilde’s church.

DAY 17: RETURN FLIGHT FROM QAQORTOQ TO ICELAND
Disembarkation on the CAPE RACE in Qaqortoq, transfer to the new airport and return flight to Iceland. Overnight stay in Keflavík at the airport.

DAY 18: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME OR EXTENSION
Today you can take the return flight to your
