Icebergs in Disko Bay on the west coast of Greenland, 2026

EXPEDITION VOYAGE FROM / TO ILULISSAT

Groenland diskobucht

One of the most exciting and rare natural spectacles on our planet awaits you on this expedition in western Greenland. On our small but exquisite ‘Cape Race’ with only 12 guests on board, you will spend a week exploring the legendary Disko Bay with its glittering icebergs and glide past the icy giants in the exotic light of the midnight sun. Such majestic moments will stay in your heart forever. Glacier ice in its most fantastic forms is an essential aspect of this trip – alternating with impressions on land and an imposing mountain backdrop as well as opportunities for whale watching and other flora and fauna.

A visit to the calving glacier Eqip Sermia is another possible highlight of the trip, if the ice in the fjord allows it, as are hikes along picturesque bays and deep fjords. Or how about a touching visit to a completely abandoned small town as a contrasting programme?

The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the day-to-day course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore exemplary.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL
Your Greenland trip starts with the journey to Iceland. You will fly from your home airport to Keflavik (Reykjavik airport) in Iceland, where you will spend the night.

DAY 2: ILULISSAT
Today you fly from Keflavik to Ilulissat. Reception at the airport and transfer to your hotel.

DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN ILULISSAT
In the afternoon, embarkation in Ilulissat (in Inuktitut, the Inuit language, ‘iceberg’) on board the small, cosy MS ‘Cape Race’, which not only exudes the charm of classic tramp shipping with its many varnished timbers and historical details, but which can also call at the smallest, most intimate bays. After a warm welcome from the crew and the obligatory safety briefing, you move into your cosy cabins.

DAY 4 – 9: THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF DISCO BAY
Depending on the weather conditions, we explore the bay by boat or hike to Sermermiut (‘inhabitants of the glacier’), the old, abandoned settlement north of Ilulissat, with a fantastic view over the famous ice fjord. In the days that follow, your first view on deck in the morning will be of the huge icebergs that await us every day in Disko Bay. An unimaginable variety of colours, shapes and dimensions will surprise you again and again. The ice giants originate mainly from Jakobshavn Isbræ, one of the largest glaciers in the world, with a flow rate of up to 40 metres a day and the unimaginable amount of around 35 cubic kilometres of ice a year that flows from it into the sea. In the vicinity of Ilulissat, they are often so close together that our CAPE RACE has to find its way between them without getting too close – this ice navigation is also an exciting experience.

Another possible highlight is the roar of the breaking ice masses of the Eqip Sermia glacier, which flows directly into the sea, from a close but safe distance, or, as a contrast, the absolute silence when the ‘Cape Race’ drifts along warmly glowing icebergs in the midnight light, without any engine noise, and you hold your breath for the sheer majesty of the moment. There is also always a chance of encountering whales. On other days, you will visit small settlements led by our guides, who will give you a very personal insight into Inuit culture in our small group, or explore the silent mountains and plains of the Arctic with the awakening plants on hikes with our expedition leader.

DAY 10: RETURN FLIGHT FROM ILULISSAT
Disembarkation on ‘Cape Race’ and return flight to Iceland. Overnight stay in Keflavik at the airport.

DAY 11: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME TOWN OR EXTENSION
Today you can take the return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, you can extend your programme in Iceland – we will be happy to advise you.
