The ultimate Greenland expedition in 2026
FROM NARSARSUAQ TO KULUSUK
Experience the unique expedition on the MS ‘Cape Race’ from Narsarsuaq in the south of Greenland to the much less-visited southern east of Greenland, to Kulusuk and Tasiilaq!
This breathtaking journey takes you to some of the most remote and unspoilt areas of Greenland. Sometimes huge icebergs and sea ice are more common, with varying intensity from year to year, because they are all carried far south by the cold East Greenland Current and will play a decisive role in determining our route.
Discover the picturesque settlements of Aappilattoq, Isertoq and Sermiliqaaq. Experience the solitude and wilderness of south-east Greenland and discover the imposing glaciers as well as the place where Fridtjof Nansen began his Greenland ice crossing. Our experienced expedition leaders will ensure that you can explore the region safely and enjoyably. Enjoy the powerful nature and the natural life of the people.
The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the day-to-day course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore examples.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN DENMARK OR ICELAND
Your Greenland trip starts with the journey to Iceland. You will fly from your home airport to Copenhagen or Keflavík (the international airport of Reykjavík) in Iceland, where you will spend a night in a hotel at the airport.
DAY 2: NARSARSUAQ
Today you fly to Narsarsuaq. Reception at the airport and transfer to your hotel.
DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN NARSARSUAQ
In the afternoon, the CAPE RACE awaits you, safely moored in the deep Eriksfjord. The crew will welcome you on board and you will receive the obligatory safety briefing. The fjord was named after Erik the Red, who explored Greenland here around 985. He founded the settlement of Brattahlið with the first church built on Greenland, the foundations of which can still be found today. With our robust and manoeuvrable Zodiac boats, we travel to the old settlement and visit Tjodhilde’s church.
DAY 3 – 16: EXPEDITION TRIP FROM NARSARSUAQ TO KULUSUK
We explore the loneliest bays of the 100 kilometre long and picturesque Prins Christian Sound. Here we not only encounter glistening icebergs and visit the glaciers that calve them directly into the sea (the roar that interrupts the silence when a huge piece of ice breaks off is something you won’t soon forget), but also raw rock faces and wild waterfalls that thunder down from the high mountains. Depending on the position of the ice, navigating your way through the giants of shape and colour can be an experience in itself. Sightings of seals and humpback whales provide further variety. You visit the town of Umivik, where Fridtjof Nansen started his historic Greenland expedition in East Greenland in 1888 to cross the ice sheet and reach the north-western part of Greenland. High mountains and glaciers tower above, while the coast is lined with numerous icebergs. It is a place of great natural beauty and a profound tranquillity that is mesmerising.
This journey is characterised by the solitude and tranquillity of nature and unique encounters with the local population. Only a small ship of the size of our ‘Cape Race’ and the experience of its crew can approach this region and its few inhabitants in an appropriately respectful manner without overrunning them. The further north-east we go, the more lonely the journey becomes. No large cruise ships come here, and expeditions with smaller ships are also extremely rare. This makes the small, remote Inuit settlements, such as Isertoq on a small island with only 48 inhabitants, all the more impressive. Life here is characterised by a deep connection between the people and nature and a strong community. Many of the inhabitants still live from hunting and fishing. If possible, we visit the school, which has less than 10 pupils. We spend a few more days in the Sermilik region. There is a small museum here, buy souvenirs locally (and with cash), because tourism in places like this only makes sense if the local people can earn money from it.
DAY 17: RETURN FLIGHT FROM KULUSUK TO ICELAND
Disembarkation on the CAPE RACE in Kulusuk and return flight to Iceland. Overnight stay in Keflavík at the airport.
DAY 18: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME TOWN
