THE WILD NORTHWEST. A PHOTOGRAPHY TRIP, 2027
EXPEDITION FROM UPERNAVIK TO ILULISSAT
Starting in Upernavik, this photo expedition takes you through the fjords and bays of north-western Greenland, past icebergs as tall as houses in the bright Arctic light. Along the coast lie remote places such as Niaqornat and Saqqaq, surrounded by vast ice fields, sandy beaches and lichen-covered hills where whales and seabirds can be observed.
A special highlight is the mighty Store Glacier with its thunderous calving. The constant play of light and colours on ice and water makes the trip a paradise for ambitious photographers. The destination of the trip is the spectacular Ilulissat Icefjord in Disko Bay – one of the most active glacier outlets in the world and famous for its monumental icebergs.
The planned itinerary
Ice conditions and wind determine the daily schedule of the expedition in these latitudes. The programme described here is therefore an example.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN COPENHAGEN OR KEFLAVÍK
Your Greenland journey begins with your arrival in Copenhagen or Keflavík (Iceland), where you will spend the night in a hotel.
DAY 2: UPERNAVIK
Today you will fly to Upernavik. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN UPERNAVIK
In the afternoon, the small, cosy CAPE RACE with only 12 guests awaits you at the harbour. After a warm welcome from the crew and the obligatory safety briefing, you will move into your comfortable cabins and the ship will set sail for its first explorations in the bay.
DAY 3 – DAY 9: UPERNAVIK
Right from the start of the journey, there are many opportunities to capture the special interplay of light, ice and landscape in photographs: the clear Arctic light makes colours glow intensely, while the calm water reflects the shapes of the passing icebergs. Often, the first impressive shots are taken as soon as the ship sets sail. From Upernavik, the passage winds through numerous fjords and bays in north-western Greenland; islands, open water and drifting icebergs, some as tall as houses, characterise the landscape. To the north lies the long Nuussuaq Peninsula, while stops such as Niaqornat and Saqqaq are made on the southern coast.
Extensive ice fields are characteristic of this area: depending on the current, ice floes cover large areas of the sea, with tabular icebergs of various shapes and sizes moving between them – ideal subjects for photos, as the Arctic light and the contrasting colours are particularly striking. Impressive – and fascinating for many travellers to photograph – is the Store Glacier, a main outlet of the Greenland ice sheet with kilometre–long, steeply sloping ice walls and thunderous calving.
In the area around Kangerup Nua and Amitsuatsiaq, sandy beaches alternate with rocks and hills covered in lichen. The remains of old whale bones on the shore and the rhythmic appearance of whales provide additional motifs. The proximity of Arctic bird colonies offers opportunities for nature observation.
At the end of the seven-day trip, the Disko Bay with the Ilulissat Icefjord is reached. This fjord, which is about 55 kilometres long and up to ten kilometres wide, is one of the most active glacier outlets in the world: gigantic icebergs often block the exit for years before drifting out into the open sea. With its dynamic formations, constantly changing light conditions and spectacular backdrop of ice and water, the Ilulissat Icefjord is considered one of the most famous photo motifs in the Arctic regions.
DAY 10: RETURN FLIGHT FROM ILULISSAT TO DENMARK OR ICELAND
Disembarkation on the ‘Cape Race’ in Ilulissat and return flight to Iceland. Overnight stay in Keflavík at the airport.
DAY 11: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME OR EXTENSION
Today you can take your return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, you can extend your programme individually – we will be happy to advise you.
