THE WILD WEST OF GREENLAND 2027

ALONG THE COAST INTO DISKO BAY

Cape Race im Westen Grönlands

From the capital Nuuk, we explore the west coast, heading north to our destination: Disko Bay with its legendary icebergs. It is a journey of over 550 kilometres as the crow flies, but it becomes much longer due to numerous trips into deep fjords, to spectacular glaciers and small, remote Inuit settlements. A journey that allows you to experience the gradual transformation of Greenland’s naturefrom the subarctic to the tundra world of the midArcticin a single trip.

In 11 days/10 nights on board, you will experience one of the most impressive coastlines in the world. In absolute solitude, you will sail through quiet fjords, along high mountains that rise steeply from the dark water. You will hike to majestic glaciers, explore small islands, climb to vantage points and immerse yourself in Greenland’s past with its Inuit and Vikings – or experience the coexistence of hunter culture and modernity today. In Disko Bay, you will glide past hundreds of icebergs glistening in the midnight sun.

The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the daily course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore examples.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN NUUK
Your Greenland trip begins with your arrival in Nuuk. You will fly from your home airport to Copenhagen or Keflavík (Iceland), where you will spend the night.

DAY 2: NUUK
Today you will fly to Nuuk. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.

DAY 3 – DAY 10: EMBARKATION IN NUUK, VOYAGE ALONG THE WEST COAST OF GREENLAND HEADING NORTH
Embarkation aboard the Cape Race begins in the morning in the port of Nuuk. This port is always bustling with fishing and freight transport activity. During the voyage north, the sea conditions and weather determine which fjord you will visit or which settlement you will call at each day. Fortunately, nature on this coast is so diverse that there are countless possibilities. For example, we will try to penetrate as deep as possible through the fjord ice into the Nigerlikasik Fjord to observe (and hear!) the calving of the glacier from a safe distance at its end.

Or we visit remote Inuit settlements such as the village of Kangaamiut, home to 300 people, which can only be reached by boat, which comes by once a week. Beyond Kangaamiut, the legendary Eternity Fjord penetrates deep inland between high mountains. Perhaps we will manage to penetrate so far into the fjord that we reach the glacier itself. Keen observation may be rewarded with sightings of humpback whales, seals or sea eagles.

DAY 11 & DAY 12: THE ‘ICE GIANTS’ OF DISCO BAY
After lonely fjords where only the crunching of pack ice can be heard, the legendary Disco Bay now opens up. You will experience an incomparable parade of icebergs in all shades of colour from light green to deep blue, calving from the Jakobshavn Glacier. This mighty ‘ice producer’ ejects more than 35 million tonnes of ice every day (approx. 35 cubic kilometres of ice per year), offering a continuously incredible natural spectacle.

We may collect a small piece of it with the Zodiac to let the shards melt with a crackle in our midnight drinks on board later. In addition to the ice, an enormous variety awaits us in Disko Bay: for example, an idyllic Inuit village on the tiny Dog Islands or a hike with a sweeping view of the distant inland ice, followed by a waterfall next to a bird cliff that almost crashes onto the bow of the ship.

DAY 13: RETURN FLIGHT FROM ILULISSAT TO ICELAND
Disembarkation at Cape Race and return flight to Iceland. Overnight stay at Keflavik Airport.

DAY 14: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME OR EXTENSION IN ICELAND
Today you can take your return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, you can extend your stay in Icelandwe will be happy to advise you.
