ULTIMATE EAST GREENLAND, 2027
EXPEDITION FROM QAQORTOQ TO KULUSUK
This ultimate expedition with our ‘Cape Race’ leads from Qaanaaq along the north-west coast of Greenland southwards to Upernavik and offers extraordinary experiences even for those familiar with Greenland. The journey begins in mythical Thule and heads south, with the ice cap accompanying us for days on end.
Untravelled fjords, huge icebergs, pack ice and small indigenous settlements are integral parts of this route. The wild, remote nature and the traditional way of life of the inhabitants are unparalleled. The entire Greenlandic coast north of Upernavik is wild, deserted and icy.
The planned itinerary
Ice conditions and wind determine the daily schedule of the expedition. The itinerary given here is therefore only an example.

Your Greenland trip begins with your arrival in Iceland. You will fly to Copenhagen or Keflavík (Reykjavík Airport), where you will spend the night at the airport hotel.
DAY 2: QAQORTOQ
Today you will fly to Qaqortoq. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN QAQORTOQ
In the afternoon, the Cape Race awaits you. On board, the crew will welcome you and you will receive the mandatory safety briefing.
We explore the loneliest bays of the 100-kilometre-long and picturesque Prins Christian Sund. Here we not only encounter glittering icebergs and visit the glaciers that calve directly into the sea (the roar that breaks the silence when a huge chunk of ice breaks off is not easily forgotten), but also raw rock faces and wild waterfalls that thunder down from the high mountains. Depending on the ice conditions, the journey through the ice giants, rich in shapes and colours, can be an experience in itself. Sightings of seals or humpback whales provide further variety.
You may visit Umiivik – the place where Fridtjof Nansen began his historic Greenland expedition in 1888 to cross the inland ice and reach the north-western part of Greenland. High mountains and glaciers tower above, while the coast is lined with numerous icebergs. It is a place of great natural beauty and a deep silence that captivates you. This journey is characterised by the solitude and tranquillity of nature and unique encounters with the local population. Only a small ship of the size of our CAPE RACE and with the experience of its crew can approach this region and its few inhabitants with the appropriate respect without overwhelming them.
The further northeast we travel, the more isolated the journey becomes. No large cruise ships venture this far, and even expeditions with smaller vessels are extremely rare. This makes the small, remote Inuit settlements, such as Isertoq, located on a small island with only about 60 inhabitants, all the more impressive. Life here is characterised by a deep connection between the people and nature and a strong sense of community. It is a place where time seems to stand still and the beauty and simplicity of life in harmony with nature can be felt everywhere. Many of the inhabitants still live from hunting and fishing and rely on the sea and the land to earn their livelihood. If possible, we visit the school, where usually less than ten pupils practise their language and maths skills.
We spend a few more days in the Sermilik region, whose capital is Tasiilaq. Here there is a small museum where many items of clothing and hunting equipment are on display. Buy souvenirs here, locally and with cash, because tourism in such places only makes sense if the population can also earn money from it.
DAY 20: RETURN FLIGHT FROM KULUSUK TO ICELAND
Disembarkation on the ‘Cape Race’ in Kulusuk and return flight to Iceland. Overnight stay at Keflavik Airport.
DAY 21: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME OR EXTEND YOUR STAY IN ICELAND
Today you can take your return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, you can extend your stay in Iceland – we will be happy to advise you.
