ULTIMATE WEST GREENLAND TOUR 1 - 2027
FROM UPERNAVIK TO QAANAAQ
This ultimate expedition with our ‘Cape Race’ along the north-west coast of Greenland from Upernavik to the far north of Qaanaaq offers extraordinary experiences even for those familiar with Greenland. The wild, remote nature and the corresponding lifestyles of the inhabitants are unparalleled. The Greenlandic coast north of Upernavik is wild, desolate and icy. The ice cap is our companion for days on end. Untravelled fjords, huge icebergs, pack ice and small indigenous settlements are all part of this expedition. At the end, the expedition leads up to the mythical Thule.
The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the daily course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore exemplary.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN COPENHAGEN OR ICELAND
Your Greenland trip begins with your arrival in Denmark or Iceland. You will fly from your home airport to Copenhagen or Keflavík (Reykjavík Airport) in Iceland, where you will spend the night.
DAY 2: UPERNAVIK
Today you will fly via Nuuk to Upernavik. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN UPERNAVIK
In the afternoon, the small, cosy Cape Race, with only 12 guests, awaits you at the harbour. After a warm welcome from the crew and the obligatory safety briefing, you will move into your comfortable cabins and the ship will set sail for its first explorations in the bay.
DAY 3 – DAY 16: HEADING NORTH
The expedition starts in Upernavik. From here, the route heads north through the Upernavik Archipelago, a region with hundreds of rocky islands, deep fjords and actively calving glaciers. Particularly impressive is the Upernavik Isstrøm, whose enormous ice front continuously releases new icebergs into Baffin Bay. Melville Bay marks the transition to one of the largest contiguous sea ice areas on the west coast. The bay impresses with huge tabular icebergs, pack ice fields and a wide, almost empty horizon. Narwhals, bowhead whales and seabird colonies can be observed in these waters. Melville Bay is extremely remote and sparsely populated – there are very few settlements in its vicinity. It is known for its glaciers and dangerous winter ice, which isolated the region until 130 years ago.
The route north leads to the legendary Cape York with its boldly shaped rock formations and vast ice fields. The area is known for the Cape York meteorite sites, which were once used by the Inuit population to make tools. Polar bears and walruses also live here along the coast. The short hikes lead along flowering tundra, with views of the coastline contrasting with the white ice floes. Zodiacs land on remote shores to discover bird colonies or explore completely secluded bays.
At the expedition destination, Kangerlussuaq Fjord, also known as Inglefield Fjord, nature appears particularly archaic: steep rocky terrain alternates with moss-covered plains, and with a little luck, seals and humpback whales will appear within sight. Hikes lead to the edges of the glaciers and views of Inglefield Fjord, often lined with kilometres of ice floes. Narwhals, ringed seals and numerous seabirds enrich the expedition experience.
DAY 17: RETURN FLIGHT FROM QAANAAQ VIA NUUK TO COPENHAGEN OR KEFLAVÍK
Disembarkation on the CAPE RACE in Qaanaaq and return flight via Nuuk to Denmark or Iceland. Overnight stay in a hotel at the airport.
DAY 18: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME TOWN
Today you can take your return flight to your home airport.
