Unknown South Greenland, 2025

Expedition Yoyage from / to Narsarsuaq

Groenland Süden Cape Race

Experience the unforgettable beauty of South Greenland on an expedition cruise with the MS “Cape Race”. Start in Narsarsuaq and discover the unique landscape of the surrounding area, the warm springs of Uunartoq, the exciting history of the village of Lichtenau, founded in 1774 by the Moravian Church, the Grænlendingar settlement of Hvalsey or Brattahlid, the place where Erik the Red settled Greenland around 985.

On spectacular hikes to the inland ice glacier, you will experience the thunder of breaking ice masses. And time and again you will spot ringed seals, reindeer or musk oxen in the fjords protected from the wind and swell.

The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the daily course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore exemplary.

Day 1: ARRIVAL TO ICELAND
Your Greenland trip starts with the journey to Iceland. You will fly from your home airport to Keflavik (Reykjavik airport) in Iceland, where you will spend one night.

Day 2: NARSARSUAQ
Today you fly from Keflavik to Narsarsuaq. Reception at the airport and transfer to your hotel.

Day 3: EMBARKING IN NARSARSUAQ
In the afternoon, the small, cozy MS “Cape Race” with only 12 guests awaits you in the harbor. After a warm welcome from the crew and the obligatory safety briefing, you move into your cozy cabins and the ship sets sail for its first explorations of the Eriksfjord. The fjord was named after Erik the Red, who explored Greenland here around 985. He founded the settlement of Brattahlid with the first church built on Greenland, the foundations of which can still be found today. With our robust and maneuverable Zodiac boats, we travel to the old settlement and visit Tjodhilde’s church.

Day 4 – 9: ON A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY IN SOUTH GREECE WITH CAPE RACE
Weather and swell determine the course of these days! They are not only found in Iceland, but also here in Greenland: hot springs. On the small island of Uunartoq, the springs are actually warm enough to bathe in. Three of them converge here in a small pool surrounded by stones. Enjoy the view of high, snow-covered mountain peaks and floating icebergs while you relax in the warm water. On shore excursions, we visit small settlements such as Qaqortoq or Narsaq, which not only offer insights into the present-day life of the Inuit, but also bring their history closer with exciting museums. With the small Cape Race, we explore the loneliest bays of the 100-kilometer-long Prins Christian Sound. Here we not only encounter glistening icebergs and visit the glaciers that calve them directly into the sea (the roar that interrupts the silence when a huge piece of ice breaks off is something you won’t soon forget), but the picturesque sound also presents itself with lush meadows and wild waterfalls that thunder down from the high mountains. Sightings of walruses, seals and whales provide further variety.

Day 10: FLIGHT BACK FROM NARSARSUAQ TO ICELAND
Disembarkation on “Cape Race” in Narsarsuaq and return flight to Iceland. Overnight stay in Keflavik at the airport.

Day 11: FLIGHT BACK TO YOUR HOME OR EXTENSION IN ICELAND
Today you can take the return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, you can extend your program in Iceland – we will be happy to advise you.
