Unknown South Greenland 2026

Expedition voyage from/to Narsarsuaq

Südgroenland Cape Race

South Greenland with its magical combination of wild mountain and glacier landscapes and numerous icebergs, but at the same time an already subarctic variety of vegetation (including small forests, historical evidence of the Inuit and Vikings as well as today’s small colourful settlements) is still an insider tip. Start in Narsarsuaq and discover the unique landscape of the surrounding area, the warm springs of Uunartoq, the exciting history of the village of Lichtenau, founded in 1774 by the Moravian Church, or Brattahlið, the place where Erik the Red settled Greenland in 985. You can experience the thunder of breaking ice masses on spectacular hikes. There is a good chance of spotting seals and whales in the sheltered fjords.
Start in Narsarsuaq and discover the unique landscape of the surrounding area, the hot springs of Uunartoq, the exciting history of the village of Lichtenau, founded in 1774 by the Moravian Church, the Grænlendingar settlement of Hvalsey or Brattahlið, the place where Erik the Red settled Greenland around 985. On spectacular hikes to the inland ice glacier, you can experience the thunder of breaking ice masses. With the small ‘Cape Race’ we explore the loneliest bays of the 50 kilometre long Tasermiut Fjord. Here we not only encounter a spectacular landscape, similar to that of Patagonia, but the picturesque fjord also presents itself with lush meadows and wild waterfalls thundering down from the high mountains. We also visit the glacier at the end of the fjord.

The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the day-to-day course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore examples.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN DENMARK OR ICELAND
Your Greenland trip starts with the journey to Denmark or Iceland. You will fly from your home airport to Copenhagen or Keflavík (Reykjavík airport), where you will spend one night in a hotel.

DAY 2: NARSARSUAQ
Today you fly to Narsarsuaq. Reception at the airport and transfer to your hotel.

DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN NARSARSUAQ
In the afternoon, the small, cosy MS ‘Cape Race’ awaits you in the harbour with only 12 guests. After a warm welcome from the crew and the obligatory safety briefing, you move into your cosy cabins and the ship sets sail for its first explorations of the Eriksfjord. The fjord was named after Erik the Red, who explored Greenland here around 985. He founded the settlement of Brattahlið with the first church built on Greenland, the foundations of which can still be found today. We take our robust and manoeuvrable Zodiac boats to the old settlement and visit Tjodhilde’s church.

DAY 3 – 9: WITH THE CAPE RACE ON A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY IN SOUTH GREENLAND
Weather, ice conditions and swell determine the course of these days! They are not only found in Iceland, but also here in Greenland: hot springs. On the small island of Uunartoq, the springs are actually warm enough to bathe in. Three of them converge here in a small pool surrounded by stones. Enjoy the view of high, snow-capped mountain peaks and floating icebergs while you relax in the warm water. On shore excursions, we visit small settlements such as Qaqortoq or Nanortalik, which not only offer insights into the present-day existence of the Inuit, but also bring their history closer with exciting museums. Experience the unforgettable beauty of South Greenland on an expedition cruise with the MS ‘Cape Race’.

DAY 10: RETURN FLIGHT FROM NARSARSUAQ TO DENMARK OR ICELAND
Disembarkation on the CAPE RACE in Narsarsuaq and return flight to Denmark or Iceland. Overnight stay in Copenhagen or Keflavík in a hotel at the airport.

DAY 11: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME DESTINATION OR EXTENSION
Today you can take the return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, you can extend your programme individually – we will be happy to advise you.
