West Coast Greenland Photo Tour 2026
EXPEDITION FROM ILULISSAT TO NUUK
In a single journey, this journey conveys the transition in nature from the central Arctic and its barren tundra and the ice giants near Ilulissat to the subarctic world of south-west Greenland, where there is a spectacular mountain and glacier backdrop and a much more diverse vegetation. An expedition along a wild, extremely lonely coast. You start in the middle of the largest iceberg field in the northern hemisphere, Disko Bay, with its thousands of majestic giants. Over the next 550 kilometres, with numerous trips into deep fjords to spectacular glaciers, you will explore this coastline with the small, comfortable CAPE RACE to the capital of Greenland, Nuuk. In addition to the two guides, a photographer will accompany you on this trip to give you tips on landscape photography.
The planned itinerary
Ice and wind determine the day-to-day course of the expedition. The itineraries listed here are therefore only examples.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN COPENHAGEN OR ICELAND
Your Greenland trip starts with the journey to Denmark or Iceland. You will fly from your home airport to Copenhagen or Keflavík (Reykjavík airport) in Iceland, where you will spend the night.
DAY 2: ILULISSAT
Today you fly to Ilulissat. Reception at the airport and transfer to your hotel.
DAY 3: EMBARKATION IN ILULISSAT
In the afternoon, the small, cosy ‘Cape Race’ awaits you in the harbour with only 12 guests. After a warm welcome from the crew and the obligatory safety briefing, you move into your cosy cabins and the ship sets sail for its first explorations of the bay.
DAY 4 AND 5: NATURAL WONDERS OF DISCO BAY
Depending on the weather conditions, we hike to Sermermiut (‘inhabitants of the glacier’), the old, abandoned settlement north of Ilulissat, with a fantastic view over the famous ice fjord, or watch the thundering break-off of the ice masses from the glacier Eqip Sermia to the north. And we always glide past hundreds of majestic icebergs that sparkle in all shades of colour in the sun.
DAY 6 – 12: HEADING SOUTH
On the journey south, the swell and each day anew determine whether or how deep we sail into a fjord, or whether we visit a remote, small Inuit settlement. Fortunately, the nature on this coast is so diverse that there are countless possibilities. We visit the village of Kangaamiut, with its 300 inhabitants, which can only be reached by boat and is visited once a week by supply ships. Behind Kangaamiut, the legendary Eternity Fjord penetrates deep inland between high mountains. Again and again we can observe humpback whales, seals or sea eagles, or we spot icebergs.
DAY 12: NUUK
With only 20,000 inhabitants, Nuuk is by far the largest city in Greenland and underlines its capital city status with a modern centre with some exciting architecture (such as the Katuaq Cultural Centre), museums, craft shops and bookshops worth seeing and, of course, Greenland’s largest harbour – and, as a contrast, the historic harbour district on the west side with the Greenlandic counterpart to the Little Mermaid on a rock. Nuuk is a great place to spend a whole day exploring the city.
DAY 13: RETURN FLIGHT FROM NUUK TO COPENHAGEN OR KEFLAVÍK
Disembarkation on the CAPE RACE in Nuuk and return flight to Denmark or Iceland. Overnight stay in a hotel at the airport.
DAY 14: RETURN FLIGHT TO YOUR HOME TOWN
Today you can board your return flight to your home airport.
