The icebergs of Disko Bay on the west coast of Greenland, 2024

Expedition trip from / to Ilulissat

Cape RAce Diskobucht Grönland

On this expedition in the west of Greenland, one of the most exciting and rare natural spectacles of our planet awaits you. On our small but fine Cape Race with only 12 guests on board, you will spend a week exploring the legendary Disko Bay with its glittering icebergs, gliding past the icy giants in the exotic light of the midnight sun. Such majestic moments stay in your heart forever.

You visit the picturesque little town of Qeqertarsuaq, also known as a fishing port for shrimp, cod and especially white halibut (which our chef likes to buy here, as this fish is still fished sustainably and stocked only here). A visit to the calving glacier Eqip Sermia is another highlight of the trip. So are hikes along picturesque bays and deep fjords. Whale watching is also extremely likely.

The trip MARE 16-24 (from 05.08. – 15.08.2024) will be accompanied by Heike Ollertz, who will offer a photography course during this trip for travelers interested in nature and landscape photography. In addition to technical and compositional introductions and lectures, as well as image discussions, photographic positions from the region will also be presented. The planned itinerary

Ice conditions and wind determine the daily schedule of the expedition. The itineraries mentioned here are therefore exemplary.

Day 1: Arrival in Iceland
Your Greenland trip starts with your arrival in Iceland. You will fly from your home airport to Keflavik (the airport of Reykjavik) in Iceland, where you will spend one night.

Day 2: Ilulissat
Today you fly from Keflavik to Ilulissat. Reception at the airport and transfer to your hotel.

Day 3: Embarkation in Ilulissat
In the afternoon, embarkation in Ilulissat (in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit, “iceberg”) on board the small, cosy MS “Cape Race”, which not only exudes the charm of classic tramp shipping with its many varnished woods and historical details, but which can also call at the smallest, most intimate bays. After a warm welcome from the crew and the obligatory safety briefing, you will move into your comfortable cabins.

Day 4 – Day 9: The natural beauty of Disko Bay
Depending on the weather, we explore the bay already by ship, or hike to Sermermiut, (“Inhabitants of the Glacier”), the old abandoned settlement, north of Ilulissats, with a fantastic view over the famous ice fjord. In the following days, your first glance on deck in the morning is at the huge icebergs that fill the entire Disko Bay. An unimaginable number of colours, shapes and dimensions will surprise you again and again. The ice giants originate from Jakobshavn Isbræ, one of the largest glaciers in the world, with a flow rate of up to 40m per day and the unimaginable amount of around 50 cubic kilometres of ice per year that flow from it into the sea.

But you will not only experience the roar of the breaking ice masses of the Eqip Sermia glacier, which flows directly into the sea, from a close but safe distance, but also the absolute silence when Cape Race drifts along warmly glowing icebergs in the midnight light, without any engine noise, and you will hold your breath from the sheer majesty of the moment. The opportunity to encounter whales is always there.
On other days you will visit small settlements, guided by our local guide, who will give you a personal introduction to the Inuit culture in our small group, or explore the silent mountains and plains of the Arctic, with the just awakening plants, on hikes with our expedition guide.

Day 10: Return flight from Ilulissat to Iceland
Disembarkation on “Cape Race” and return flight to Iceland. Overnight in Keflavik at the airport.

Day 11: Return flight to your home town or extension in Iceland
Today you can take the return flight to your home airport. Alternatively, an individual programme extension in Iceland is possible – we will be happy to advise you.
