Nature Experience Southern Baltic Sea 2021

on Board MS „Cape Race“

Nature Experience Southern Baltic Sea

The southern Baltic Sea has long been a destination for many vacationers, and numerous well-known seaside resorts attract visitors with beautiful beaches and tourist infrastructure. In addition, the Baltic Sea coast is still a fascinating natural landscape – with very diverse coastlines and landscapes – which are now protected as nature reserves in many places.

On our voyages with the stylish motor vessel „Cape Race“ we visit some of the most beautiful nature reserves of the southern Baltic Sea and explore these beautiful natural landscapes during hikes and boat trips with the accompanying Zodiacs.

The first itinerary with the „Cape Race“ starts in Hamburg. Down the Elbe River, a first destination is the North Sea island of Helgoland, where we visit the main island and the dune and observe, among other things, seabirds and grey seals – the largest predators in Germany. Afterwards, we will sail through the Kiel Canal into the Baltic Sea, where beautiful nature reserves (such as Schleimünde and Geltinger Birk) on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic coast will be our destination.

The second program has the sea and coastal landscapes of the southern Baltic Sea as its destination. We offer this program on 5 dates. Destinations are the most beautiful nature destinations on the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. We visit among other things the Jasmund National Park and drive here along the spectacular chalk cliffs of the island of Rügen. The pristine wild beaches and forests in the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenküste and the rugged coastal landscape of the Biosphere Reserve South-East Rügen are further highlights of this trip.

The itineraries and the expedition ship „Cape Race“ offer special conditions:

  • A maximum of 12 guests can participate in the nature cruises with the expedition ship „Cape Race“. With this small group, optimal use of time and flexibility are guaranteed.
  • The stylish and comfortable furnishings of the „Cape Race“ make participation in this program an unforgettable experience.
  • The cruise and shore excursions are accompanied by a competent German-speaking tour guide.

Conclusion:
A program for travelers who want to experience dreamlike coastal landscapes – and have high demands on the style and comfort of the expedition ship.

MARE 01 -21:
Hamburg – Helgoland – Kiel Canal – Western Baltic Sea – Kiel

At the beginning of May we leave the port of Hamburg, down the river Elbe, past the Blankeneser Treppenviertel to the island of Neuwerk in the estuary, heading for Helgoland, Germany’s only high sea island.

We spend a day on the dune and marvel at seals and grey seals. On the main island we observe the breeding guillemots and during an excursion to Lange Anna, Helgoland’s landmark, we not only discover rare species of island flora, but also enjoy the spectacular view over the red rock.

The onward journey takes us back to the mouth of the Elbe and through the locks in Brunsbüttel into the Kiel Canal, the world’s busiest artificial sea route, past brightly blooming rapeseed fields, imposing estates and under the historic floating ferry in Rendsburg. The up-close encounters with numerous cargo ships on the canal leave no one untouched, and the pilotage duty seems comprehensible to everyone. The exciting canal crossing ends in Holtenau on the Kiel Fjord.

In the Schleimünde nature reserve with its dunes, salt marshes and wind mudflats, we observe the lively activity of storm-petrels, sea eagles, gray geese and Arctic terns. Further north, the Geltinger Birk, among other places, invites you to hike through its unique habitat. With our maneuverable Zodiac boats we are especially flexible in exploring lonely coasts and their fauna and flora.

On board we will also introduce you to the marine ecology of the western Baltic Sea. Among other things, you will marvel at plankton samples under the microscope or get to the bottom of the Baltic Sea’s real secret, its exciting salinity curve.

This cruise ends in the harbor of Kiel’s inner fjord.

MARE 02 -21 – MARE 06 – 21:
From Kiel to Swinoujscie (and back)

There are landscapes that can be explored mainly from the air, on foot or by means of an all-terrain vehicle. But the coasts of our earth can be explored mainly from the sea. With our “Cape Race” you will experience the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in a unique and very special way.

Not only do we sail close to shining chalk cliffs, but we also land with our agile Zodiac boats on lonely beaches, remote coasts and enchanted forests. Far away from the hustle and bustle of the cities and the noise of the streets, we discover a coastline full of magic and solitude, wild flora and rare fauna – whether in the Jasmund National Park, the forests of the Baltic resort of Binz, the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve, the mysterious Wustrow Peninsula, the Ghost Forest of Nienhagen, the Mönchgut Peninsula or the island of Poel, to name just a few highlights.

The possibilities for short walks and explorations along the coast are so numerous and varied that one week is hardly enough.

With our experienced guide you will get to know a uniquely impressive coastline, relax in the evening in the comfortable salon or gaze from deck over the darkening sea. On board we will introduce you to the marine ecology of the western Baltic Sea. Among other things, you will marvel at plankton samples under the microscope or get to the bottom of the Baltic Sea’s real secret, its exciting salinity curve.

Notes:
If the pandemic situation allows it, the Danish islands are also possible destinations.

The itinerary of the cruises is not only based on our planning, but primarily on the weather conditions (e.g. the crossing to Helgoland) and on regulations concerning COVID-19.
